In this class, we will dive into the deep ocean and learn about some of the most famous sunken ships, including the RMS Titanic and the USS Arizona. We will also look at some of the lesser known ones, including the USS Peterson DD-969, a United States Navy destroyer discovered by accident. We will watch clips of the footage from salvage experts, read articles/stories about shipwrecks and discuss some of the myths and facts surrounding the wrecks. Week 1Lesson 1Unit 1: Sunken Ships of the World: An IntroductionWe will view video clips and discuss sunken ships of the world in the classroom forum. Students will complete a web quest on their own of their favorite ship and share with the class.Week 2Lesson 2Unit 2: The RMS TitanicWe will view video clips and discuss the RMS Titanic in the classroom forum. They will read excerpts of the ship’s history, voyage and tragedy and check out survivors stories. Students will complete activities such as word searches and games about the ship and its voyage.Week 3Lesson 3Unit 3: The USS ArizonaWe will view video clips and discuss the USS Arizona in the classroom forum. They will read excerpts of the ship’s history, voyage and tragedy and check out survivors stories. Students will complete activities such as word searches and games about the ship and its voyage.Week 4Lesson 4Unit 4: The USS Peterson and Other Military Lost VesselsWe will view video clips and discuss the USS Peterson in the classroom forum. We will hear from a sailor who served on the ship. They will read excerpts of the ship’s history, voyage and watch clips of its sinking. Students will complete activities such as word searches and games about the ship and its voyage. They will turn in their webquest on their chosen ship.

I love teaching the interesting and strange history of some legendary ships and shipwrecks. I am a self-proclaimed Titanic enthusiast and love looking at facts and debunking myths surrounding legends and tales of the deep! Hands on activities combined with literature is a unique method I can offer! I am a licensed 7-12 grade English teacher and have experience using comprehension based strategies to support students as they uncover interesting information.

Each week students will receive a reading, comprehension and extension activity.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

The teacher will provide a note sheet for students on the topic of famous shipwrecks that students will fill in during lessons.To complete the making of the boat model, students will need common household materials, including egg cartons, glue, paint and other embellishments!

This class is suitable for ages 8-12. There is some discussion of catastrophic events that lead to the shipwrecks and loss of life and these will be handled with sensitivity.
We will refer to first-person accounts/survivor stories regarding the ships/voyages. We will review youtube videos of the voyages and experiences of the ships.
