Take a step into another's shoes, and see life from Apple's point of view; a 12 year old Filipino struggling to "fit in" with her American life.
Class experience
In this class, students will come together as eager readers, ready to jump into the world of 12-year-old Apple Yengko, a Filipino-American dealing with some major middle school drama. We will discuss some uncomfortable situations where Apple is bullied for her Filipino culture. We'll talk about what to do if you are being bullied, and we'll also talk about how we can be friends and helpers when we see others being bullied. 8 live meetings across 4 weeks students are encouraged to message...
Students will : > Build their reading vocabulary > Discuss similarities and differences between their own life and Apple's > Examine author's craft of "extras" (in this case, music titles) to create a full reading "experience" > Analyze characters actions and choices, and how those choices influence the plot.
My favorite part of teaching at this age range is watching kids get excited about what they're reading, and the conversations and connections they make through the books. I bring humor and patience with me in my teacher bag of tricks, and hold students to high expectations. I am available anytime by email if there's any questions.
Students will need: 1 personal copy (purchase or library) of "Blackbird Fly" by Erin Entrada Kelly Post-It style notepad Pencil Access to song lyrics for final "project" - I suggest youtube, or spotify I will provide session guiding questions in a google doc for your convenience
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
