If you are a fan of dystopian books like The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner, then you will love the Divergent series! Divergent tells the story of a dystopian world where people live in factions, each centering around one particular virtue that dictates the way they live their lives. In this book we will follow Beatrice Prior as she turns 16, decides on her faction, and makes a life within the faction. In this class we will read through Divergent, the first book in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. This class is open to students who are reading the series for the first time and students who may have read the book previously, but would like to re-read it in a book club setting. Students will complete the reading ahead of time and then we will meet together to discuss the book. Through our class discussions we will work on: -comprehension skills -analyzing the characters and their actions -making connections -discussing the author's purpose for including different events and characters in the book -comparing and contrasting different characters and events The teacher will use discussion questions to guide student conversations and discussions. Students are encouraged to jot down any questions or thoughts they have while reading to share with the class. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings from the readings each session. We will meet twice a week for three weeks and follow the schedule below for reading the book. Class 1: Chapters 1-7 Class 2: Chapters 8-12 Class 3: Chapters 13-18 Class 4: Chapters 19-24 Class 5: Chapters 25-31 Class 6: Chapters 32-39 Please have the first 7 chapters read before the first class meeting.
