In the first 8 weeks of this 12-week course, students will learn the history behind some of the most famous shipwrecks. They will have a chance to learn about why they are famous, theories of why they sunk, and where the remains are today. Students will take a journey into history and explore the ships that have still yet to be discovered as well as the research groups working hard to uncover their locations and remains. We will explore famous pirate ships and discuss the history of how these ships were used for piracy and became famous for being linked to pirates such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd and discuss their whereabouts today. We will also explore underwater technology such as deep water submersibles and plans for recovery efforts of challenging shipwrecks such as Ernest Shackleton's Endurance. We will also look at some of the challenges faced when discovering an unknown shipwreck when its remains are extremely valuable. Students will also have a chance to learn about some of the techniques used to transport and protect precious findings once the shipwrecks have been discovered. In the last 4 weeks of this course, children will learn about the theories surrounding the disappearance of many ships and airplanes lost to the mysterious area known as the Bermuda Triangle. Children will investigate possible explanations such as the Methane Gas Theory, Compass Variation theories, and many others. During this course, we will also look into some of the famous aircraft or ships that have mysteriously entered this area and never returned. There will be many opportunities for children to openly discuss class topics as well as utilize an interactive whiteboard in nearpod that allows students to express their ideas, answer questions and contribute to the discussion. The class will be made up of PowerPoint presentations on the topic shared by the teacher as well as short videos pertaining to the topic that children will have a chance to comment on and discuss. Children do not have to have any prior knowledge on the topic, just the curiosity for wanting to learn more about this mysterious location. Teacher expertise and credentials
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. At the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean-up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their lives to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post-graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning, and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
