Class Experience

What will be taught, and what topics will be covered:
Students will explore the concept of an optical illusion, how an illusion is achieved, the visual and physiological elements behind what we perceive, and engage in a social aspect to the class when students share their thoughts and past Disney experiences. Students will learn the math concepts that went into creating Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom. Students will also look at the power that color combinations have when engineers want visitors to see their environment differently than it is in reality.
How is the class structured:
I will be using a combination of discussion, comprehension checking questions, and slide show full of examples of forced perspective seen in Disney World. The class size will be kept small so that students can actively take part in a discussion with the slide show and teacher input leading the discussion.
How will I teach:
I believe the best way for a student to gain, use, and retain new information is by immediately using the new information which is where the focus on student discussion comes into play. My goal as the teacher will be to introduce the concept of forced perspective, show examples of it in Disney World, and keep students' discussion on topic related issues. We will have slides, video clips, discussion, and Disney trivia to help us make the most out of our class.
Required experience or knowledge:
Every student is welcome whether they have no previous Disney knowledge or live just outside the parks. A study of Disney World parks is a fascinating introduction to how the optical illusion of forced perspective makes us interact differently with our environment.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of forced perspective and the planning that goes into a park like Disney World. They will see psychology, math, and science at play in the Disney World theme parks.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have over 14 years of education experience working with students anywhere from preschool age to college aged students. I worked with large groups in private and public school classrooms and smaller groups in our church's student and youth ministry. My Bachelor's in Elementary Education and 8 years of home educating my own children has helped me to learn the importance of a good education. Students can go anywhere given the right tools. I believe education should prepare students to become life long learners knowing how to research and formulate their own opinions and decisions as well educated adults. I am excited to bring my love of reading and quality literature to a digital classroom to help your students engage in a new way with books! Travel is a passion of mine as well. So much about our world can be learned through travel so I would love to take your students around our country digitally. If your student is looking for a creative outlet, I have some great craft classes and entry level life skill classes that can let them dip their toes into new hobbies. As a home school mom of four kids, if I am not leading class time in my own home or reading a book for myself, I am planning a trip! We love to RV and travel in the local southeastern part of the USA. We are avid Disney fans who are always planning our next Walt Disney World Trip. Along with our four children who are within 5 years of each other, we have two cats and two dogs which adds to the overall zoo environment. We love our full house where someone is always building something, reading something, or planning a trip into the backyard. I am looking forward to working with your children!
