Class Experience

Discovery learning is a unique yet effective way to teach math, especially word problems. Word problems provide the students with pictures, ideas, and situations, not just numbers making discovery learning an excellent approach for learning how to solve word problems.

This course is unique in that it works at the pace of the specific needs ofthe students in each course. The complexity of the word problems in this course is dependent on the needs of each group and this course moves as slow or as quickly as is necessary to engage and meet the needs of the whole group.

Students will discover numerous strategies to help them master solving word problems. This course begins by solving simple multiplication and division word problems in order to build a strong foundation and to build math confidence. These foundational problems are single process problems.

In the second class, students begin with the foundational problems and then move on to solving problems that involve more than one process. These problems will include multiplciation or division along with addition or subtraction.

The final two classes, will begin with the simple, foundational word problems. The class then moves onto solve complex, multi-process word problems. These problems will have numerous steps and will include both multiplication and division along with addition and/or subtraction.

In the middle of every class, the students will take a "brain break" and be shown visual puzzles. Students will be shown an optical illusion, a geometry puzzle, a picture puzzle, etc. After looking at the puzzle for 30 seconds, everyone comes together to discuss their answers. This is an opportunity for students to take a break from the formal word problems, however it is an excellent learning opportunity. It allows students to think about math in a different way and try to see other people's perceptions. It's also most student's favorite part of class because they don't even realize they're learning!

This is an excellent class for students ready for a challenge or for mathmeticians struggling with solving word problems or just struggling with math in general.

Prerequisites: Students should have a basic knowledge of mutliplication and division.
