Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Each class will begin with a math question or problem that focuses on addition and/or subtraction (think word problem). The students will then "discover" the answer in class. This means that students will work toward generating their own ideas for solving the problem at hand.

In the first classes students will be given simple, two variable addition problems then move basic, two variable subtraction problems. The middle of the course moves onto discovering techniques to solve more complex three variable math problems in both addition and subtraction. The end of the course moves onto problems with numerous variables that involve both addition and subtraction.

Students will learn numerous math problem-solving techniques throughout the course. Instead of being told just how to solve the problem, students will understand why the math works because student generated problem-solving techniques are more meaningful for the student's learning, meaning they remember and understand it better. Students will be encouraged to teach the class the method they used. If they can teach it to someone else, they get it! Both standard and long format equations will be shown and discussed at the very end of each class. This is a great class for struggling mathmeticians!
