In “Discovering the Sea with Henri Matisse: Drawing with Scissors,” students will learn about the famous French artist Henri Matisse and his compositions that he created by cutting out paper shapes with scissors. Matisse called this process “painting with scissors”. Matisse traveled to the South Seas and was greatly influenced by the beauty of spirals, patterns and geometric shapes of the underwater world. Students will create their own Matisse inspired seascape by cutting out shapes and arranging their own collage based masterpiece . As a teacher, I weave other age appropriate subjects into my lessons so that they can be educational and fun. In this lesson, students will learn about sealife and the underwater world as well as new vocabulary words such as “vibrant, vivid, expressive, symmetry and geometric”. We will also discuss various shapes, such as geometric, organic, repeated patterns and positive and negative shapes. I look forward to creating and learning with your student!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a BA and MA in Art History from the University of North Texas. I have been a teacher for more than 15 years in public schools, private schools and homeschool. I have taught all ages from elementary all the way to high school and have loved each level equally.
I believe that art education expands a students worldview and broadens their horizon and is essential for students to create a bridge between their local and global communities.
I am a life long learner and would consider it a joy and privilege to impart some of my passion to your child as one of my students. I love to travel and study masterpieces, architecture as well as explore the outdoors and study nature. I don't just love teaching art for arts sake, but to look at History through art, as well as Science. Art is a fun place to learn about subjects that may be dry in a regular classroom.
In my classroom, we will learn to look at and create our own masterpieces of nature, animals, landscape, architecture and more. I can't wait to see you in the classroom and creating art with you!
