Class Experience

In this class, students will learn about 10 women who excelled in their fields during periods of history when men typically dominated these fields. These fierce feminists rose to heights as leaders, creators, healers, problem solvers, and overcomers. Their stories inspire young learners to keep working toward their goals, even in the face of opposition or challenging circumstances. I feel it's especially important for young girls to have role models such as the women we'll be learning about in this class. The following is a schedule of which female role models I'll cover each week:
1. Joan of Arc & Indira Gandhi
2. Frida Kahlo & Maya Angelou
3. Florence Nightingale & Maria Montessori
4. Marie Curie & Hypatia
5. Rosa Parks & Noor Inayat Khan; Submit project plans
6. *Student Projects
*Project for Week 6: Students will choose one woman who made history & discover more about her. They will then present what they learned to the class during our last meeting. Projects can be in the form of essays (one-two paragraphs), artistic representations (such as drawings, paintings, paper mache, etc.), oral presentations, or other creative formats. Students need to submit their project plans to me at the end of our Week 5 Class.

Each weekly class time (40 min) will be split into 20 min increments, with approximately 20 minutes given to each fierce female we're studying. I will present information through lectures and slides. We will have discussion time each week. I encourage student participation and want to see the learners actively engaged with me and with one another. Students will also "take over" as "teachers" during the final class meeting, as they present their projects and share what they learned with us.

This class does not require the student to have any prior knowledge of the subject.

I teach Literature, Writing, Poetry, Mythology, and Folklore classes for Middle and High School. I also teach a small selection of classes for elementary-aged students.

I have a BS in Education and a MA in English. I taught in the public school system for seven years. After having my third child, I chose not to return to my teaching position. This decision is what put us on the path toward homeschooling. I began homeschooling in 2006, and my last homeschooled child graduated in May 2021. My youngest child attends a local school designed for neurodivergent and disabled students.

I am the author of the book Mountains and Melancholy: A Collection of Poetry, and I am also a former author of one of the health blogs at HealthyPlace.com. I am a teacher member of the Folger Shakespeare Library.

I see myself as a partner in the student's learning process. I believe in student/teacher collaboration. I desire to ignite a fire within students so that they yearn for more rather than try to stuff them with facts that they will forget the minute they walk out the door or close the laptop. I see learning as a lifelong adventure, and I teach in a way that reflects that belief.

I have one dog and one cat. My dog is named after a Lord of the Rings character: Gandalf. My cat's name is Freyr (like the Norse god.) I love fall and Halloween, and all the things that come with them: cool temperatures, crisp air, vibrantly colored leaves, pumpkin spice, warm cider, dressing in costumes, trick-or-treating, and decorating my house -- I even have a Halloween tree. I am usually seen with coffee in one hand and a book in the other. Now you know a bit about me. I look forward to meeting you in one of my classes soon.
