This is the first quarter of an inquiry-based high-school level Geometry course, covering Chapters 1-3 of _Discovering Geometry_ (4th Ed) by Michael Serra.

Class experience

When I first transitioned from teaching science to teaching math, this course quickly became my favorite subject to teach. I love the elegance of geometry and logical reasoning and I particularly love teaching this subject using the inquiry method in the _Discovering Geometry_ text. I am so very excited to bring this course to Outschool!
Learners will need the following:

1. A copy of _Discovering Geometry_ (4th Ed) by Michael Serra. Please be sure you have the correct edition of this book (as opposed to the 3rd or 5th editions, which will likely also come up when you search for this title.) I choose the 4th edition because it offers an excellent curriculum but can still be found at an affordable price. This textbook can be purchased new for about $40 and used for as little as $6
ISBN-10 --> 1559538821
ISBN-13 --> 9781559538824

2. A geometric compass. In my experience, plastic compasses do not last as long and are more likely to loosen, bend, or break over time -- even a short period of time! I recommend a metal compass with an adjustment wheel in the center. Brands Blick and Staedtler make compasses like this for about $9.

3. A pad of tracing paper.

4. A durable ruler and protractor. (These can often be found bundled together with a compass as a "geometry kit" -- this can be a good value, but please be sure that the compass is the kind that I describe above so that you won't have to replace it later).

5. A college-ruled notebook, sharp pencils and a good eraser.

6. A scientific or graphing calculator. If you do not yet have a scientific or graphing calculator and would like a recommendation, I recommend the TI-30XIIS as a good scientific calculator for middle and high school students.

This materials list is the same for the entire year of the course. With the exception of replacing consumables (such as purchasing an additional notebook if the first one gets filled up), families will not need to purchase any additional supplies in order to continue with Quarters 2, 3 and 4 of this course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Typically, Geometry is taken by students in 9th or 10th grade -- after Algebra I and before Algebra II. It is also common for students to take Geometry earlier -- in 8th or even 7th grade -- IF they have been on an accelerated math course and have already completed Algebra I. In addition, I have successfully had highly-motivated students take my high school Geometry course concurrently with Algebra I.

This is Quarter 1 of a year-long course. In order to complete the full course, students will need to continue with Quarters 2, 3 and 4. Each quarter is scheduled back-to-back at the same days/times to provide continuity, with Quarter 2 starting in December, Quarter 3 starting in Feburary, and Quarter 4 starting in May and wrapping up at the end of June.

I have been teaching since 2006 and my specialties are Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry. Although I have been focusing on math education for the majority of my time as a teacher, I started my career in the sciences. I have a biology degree from...
