Beginner Level
The Harry Potter literary universe offers a rich trove of unforgettable characters and captivating chronicles that can help us explore the ideas, applications and consequences of various ethical positions, and how they help us understand what it means to live a good life. This class aims to introduce students to the major ethical theories that philosophers use today to describe and explain human behavior, and to help students identify their own ethical point of view. Theories of deontology, nihilism, utilitarianism, and subjectivism will be explored in the context of everyday concepts like authenticity, friendship, justice, and truth. This is the first of a two-part class that offers a fun and engaging way to explore deep ethical concepts.
Learning Goals
Become familiar with, and conversant in, the dominant ethical theories and concepts that shape our modern world.
Learn the advantages and disadvantages of those dominant approaches
