CLASS STRUCTURE This is the final quarter of a full-year Algebra 2 course intended for students who have taken Quarters 1, 2 and 3 of the same course. Students are also expected to have covered right-triangle trigonometry before starting Quarter 4 of this class. (I have a separate 6 week class called Discovering Trigonometry which covers the required material.) In this inquiry-based course, your learner will continue to discover the algebraic principles that form the basis for calculus,...
Problem sets are assigned for each lesson and can be completed individually. Learners do not need to turn in their completed problem sets as homework -- instead, they are provided with a video answer key that they can use to check their own work and ensure that they are on the right track.
Learners will need the following: 1. A copy of _Discovering Advanced Algebra_ (2nd Ed.) published by Key Curriculum Press. Please be sure you have the correct edition of this book. I choose the 2nd edition because it offers an excellent curriculum but can still be found at an affordable price. This textbook can be purchased used for as little as $5 ISBN: 1559539844 ISBN13: 9781559539845 2. A pad of graph paper. 3. A college-ruled notebook, sharp pencils and a good eraser. 4. A graphing calculator (such as the TI-83) or consistent access to this free online graphing calculator: https://www.geogebra.org/. Students who reliably have access to the web graphing calculator do not need to purchase a graphing calculator, however if you plan to join classes from a phone or a device where you cannot easily access the online graphing calculator during class, I would strongly recommend investing in a handheld graphing calculator.
Periodic quizzes and tests are assigned to be completed and returned to me for feedback. When requested, a grade will be provided based on these assessments.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS This is Quarter 4 of a year-long course. It is expected that learners have taken Quarters 1-3 of this course before enrolling in this section. It is highly recommended that students take my six-week short course in trigonometry (https://outschool.com/classes/discovering-trigonometry-Om20UUk6?usid=AKt43137&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link) before starting Quarter 4.
This course uses the 2nd Edition of the Key Curriculum Press textbook _Discovering Advanced Algebra_.
