In this two-day fun country study, students will love learning all about Scotland. We will begin with a video introducing the sights of Scotland. The students will use their printable interactive notebook to document their findings along the way. During the second class, the students will have the opportunity to make a Nessie craft. They will learn about key facts (geography and the capital city), the Scottish flag and food, some Scottish phrases (basic words), and famous landmarks (Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness, Skara Brae). I will also share an easy Scottish recipe for shortbread. I will facilitate learning by providing knowledgeable stimulation through PowerPoint presentations, primary sources, example props (I have a junior bagpipe set I will share with the class), , asking questions, providing ethical and respectful options, and resources for further student inquiry. I will foster interactions between the student and content, other students, and myself. Day 1: Students will learn about: • UK Geography • Scotland’s Geography • Scotland’s Flag • Scottish Food • Talking like a Scott (with Scottish phrases and translation) • Skara Brae • Great Highland Bagpipes (Junior Bagpipes to share) • Scottish Highlands Day 2: Students will learn about: • Edinburgh Castle • Loch Ness (Lake- Geography) • Loch Ness Monster • Make a Loch Ness Monster Craft • The students can share their finished crafts with the class.
Learning Goals
The student will be able to:
Identify natural characteristics of places (e.g., climate, topography).
Describe simple maps to identify the location of Scotland in the UK.
Identify and classify characteristics of places as human or natural.
Identify and compare components that makeup Scottish Culture such as language, food, and music.
Create their own Nessie craft.
Understands that historical events can be interpreted differently by different individuals, families, and communities.
Demonstrate the importance of listening to other points of view in the classroom.

Supply List
Student supplies needed: Before class the student will need any/all the worksheets/interactive notebook pages (I provide) printed, cut, and prepared for class. You will need a note-book or paper, pencil, crayons or markers, scissors, glue and a popsicle stick (you could even use a straw) for the project.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a certified Social Studies teacher and I taught 7th grade Social Studies/World History. I have been teaching different subjects for 8 years. I have a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences-Education from Pennsylvania State University. This is where I took multiple researched-based classes and coursework in European History, World History, Cultural Geography and World Reginal Geography. More recently, I have been reading a book series based in Scotland and the history teacher in me can't help but learn more. I have been reading many books on the history and culture of Europe and Scotland, as well as watching documentaries about the topic. Most importantly, I have a passion for teaching social studies and science and I enjoy incorporating reading and math skills into these topics!
