Class Experience

This is a live class. Please note that I also offer a flex version of this class here: https://outschool.com/classes/understanding-and-working-with-exponents-oYEasQKR?sectionUid=062435fe-237c-4ebc-aeb3-baf30810b408&usid=AKt43137&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

In this three-session course, students will explore and discover the rules of exponents. I scaffold this lesson in such a way that learners are guided from basic exponent terminology all the way through operating with exponents that are negative numbers or fractions.

Session 1:
Parts of an Exponential Expression
Exponential vs Expanded vs Standard Notation
Discovery: Product Rule
Discovery: Power of a Power Rule
Practice problems with the rules discovered in Session 1

Session 2:
Review of Practice Problems
Discovery: Quotient Rule
Discovery: Power of a Product/Quotient Rule
Practice problems with the rules discovered in Session 2

Session 3:
Review of Practice Problems
Discovery: Negative Exponent Rule
Discovery: Zero Exponent Rule
Discovery: Fractional Exponent Rule
Students will be provided with an additional set of practice problems covering the rules discovered in Session 3. An answer key will be provided so that learners or parents can check their work.

This course addresses the following Common Core Math Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.EE.A.1
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.A.1
Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSN.RN.A.1
Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSN.RN.A.2
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a fan of inquiry and discovery learning. I enjoy teaching the rules of exponents because I find that students are often able to intuit the rules based on prior knowledge. This makes the content not only accessible, but also fun!
