Participation in encouraged but not required. It can include an introduction post, discussion posts, assignments, and projects in the Outschool Classroom. This allows students to process what they are learning by collaborating with peers and the teacher. Participation in assignments allows students to practice and reinforce learning. This also provides opportunities for the teacher to gauge student learning and provide interventions if necessary. Private messages or classroom comments are usually responded to within 24 hours with the exception of weekends. ******Courses are not graded unless requested. If grades are needed, please let me know upon enrollment or prior to the course beginning to arrange submission of work for grading/feedback. Thank you.****
Syllabus
28 Lessons
over 14 WeeksLesson 1:
Nature of Science - Lab Safety, Scientific Investigations, and Varia
We'll lay the foundation by exploring the nature of science. We'll discuss the importance of lab safety, the steps involved in scientific investigations, and the concept of variables. Through engaging discussions and activities, we'll understand how to conduct experiments safely, identify variables, and analyze data scientifically.
Lesson 2:
Scientific Design & Ping Pong Ball Lab
In this lesson we will conduct a thrilling Ping Pong Ball Lab. We'll learn how to create hypotheses, design experiments, and analyze results. Through hands-on activities with ping pong balls, we'll explore concepts like gravity, force, and motion.
Lesson 3:
Periodic Table, Calculating Neutrons & Periodic Table of Elements Bingo
We will discuss the organization and significance of the Periodic Table of Elements. Learn how to calculate the number of neutrons in an atom, a crucial skill in understanding atomic structure. Enjoy a fun game of Periodic Table of Elements Bingo, reinforcing your knowledge of element symbols and properties.
Lesson 4:
Law of Conservation of Mass & Counting Atoms
Explore the Law of Conservation of Mass and understanding how matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. Apply understanding by counting atoms, which is crucial for balancing chemical equations.

Supply List
List of lab materials will be provided 4-7 days before each lab. Students are not required to purchase the materials, however, they will benefit from participating in the lab versus just observing. Students will need to create a Schoology account for this course if a grade is requested. A course code will be provided prior to the course starting.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I've been teaching middle school comprehensive science since 2014 and I taught 5th-grade science prior to moving to middle school. I currently help design activities that support the 7th & 8th-grade curriculum for all of the science teachers. I will be incorporating reading and writing in this science course as well. I have a master's degree in reading and writing, and I am a firm believer in reading and writing in the content area. I have experience working with learners of various levels and challenges and can make modifications if requested.
