In this 4 week class based on the “What is” books, we will take a look at where is our solar system, what are the different planets, what is the difference between a planet - comet - moon, and what life would be like on each planet.

Homework
1 hour per week. Class 1 - Each student will create their own pendulums and measure the time and distance Class 2 - Color in and complete flip books (worksheets that will be accessed through the classroom during week 1.) Class 3 - Using your constellation worksheets, try to see if you can identify any constellations at night Class 4 - Worksheet to be provided.

US Grade 1 - 4
Space (....the final frontier.....) - what is it? How are the planets different? What are constellations? Could we live on other planets? In this class, we will learn about the solar system using the book by Stephanie Sabol, "Where Is Our Solar System?" Come and join us as we explore the universe around us. 

Students will learn:

Class 1 - Introduction, Chapter 1-2 - Discussion of ancient beliefs; Create phases of the moon out of Oreo cookies; Learn about Galileo and his experiments
Class 2 - Chapter 3-5 - Discussion of Planet names; Explore the Inner and Outer Planets; Create a Flip Book about Each Planet (Worksheets provided.)
Class 3 - Chapter 6-7; Explore the planet Earth; Explore other Solar Systems; Connect the Dot Constellation Puzzles
Class 4 - Chapters 8-11; Who are the Astronauts; Possibility of life in space; Looking towards the future; Neil DeGrasse Tyson


Each week, by Wednesday evening (9pm PST) -

-I will email each student a link that weeks lecture and assignments. This will be on YouTube and is in a private account that is embedded into the Outschool classroom page.  
-  Assignments will consist of discussion and essay questions, short research topics, Youtube videos, and worksheets. These will be posted on the classroom page. 
- In my flex classes, each family can determine the level of participation in the course. 
- Communication will be done through the Outschool classroom.  
-I will check in with each student several times during the week to check on progress of the homework, address any questions, or to engage in a discussion about the topic covered. Each student is encouraged to message (through the Outschool classroom) me anytime they have any questions or thoughts about the class.  
- Each week, there may be additional articles, videos, or pictures that will be posted to the classroom page to engage students in open conversations about that weeks topic.

Students will explore all aspects of space! We will learn about the different planets in our solar system, the phases of the moon, different astronomers throughout history, what makes Earth unique, what the constellations are, space exploration, and about Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

Parental Guidance
Some students may need help with cutting the filling in the Oreo cookies or assembling flip books. Parental supervision is advised when viewing stars at night. This class will utilize Youtube videos for sharing of lecture videos, as well as supplemental lessons. All Youtube videos are embedded into the Outschool platform. This class may also utilize Kahoot. Learners will be given a direct link and game pin to play.
Supply List
Students should have their own copy of the book "Where Is Our Solar System?" by Stephanie Sabol. 

Class 1 - Oreo cookies, popsicle stick or plastic knife to cut filling in cookies; string and different size objects
Class 2-4 - Worksheets provided; crayons or colored pencils suggested
