Welcome! In this class students will discuss and critically examine the Latin meanings and "pseudo-Latin" meanings behind the SPELLS used in the Harry Potter books. This is meant to be a fun adventure to figure out the deeper meaning underneath the names of spells that J.K. Rowling chose to use in the books. We will discuss why the Latin language was chosen for spells in Harry Potter instead of a different language. In order to fully understand the meaning of the Latin used in Harry Potter spells and to be able to create their own spells students will be briefly introduced to word parts (prefix, root, suffix). Student will then analyze Harry Potter spells to understand their Latin meanings and how the spell is used in the books. The names of the spells will be broken down to explain their intended purpose, the Latin root, and related English words. NOTE: this class uses the interactive presentation platform Nearpod for students to see the slides.

I am fascinated by the Greco-Roman world; its history, literature, culture, and languages. I have an M.A. in Classics and have taught Roman history, as well as other Classics related subjects, to a range of ages and skill levels online and in a traditional classroom. This course is meant to be fun! I have read the Harry Potter series more times than I can count, so I thought it would be fun to combine my two passions into this exciting class that explores the world of Harry Potter through classics.
