Discover! Hands-On 3rd Grade Math Multi-Digit Addition & Subtraction Strategies

In this dynamic and engaging course, students will develop a strong foundation in addition and subtraction skills. Over the course of six weeks, students will explore various addition and subtraction strategies, gradually progressing from 2-digit to 3-digit numbers. Through hands-on activities, problem-solving exercises, and interactive learning, students will enhance their computational fluency, strengthen their problem-solving skills, and gain confidence in performing addition and subtraction operations.

Week 1: 2-Digit Addition without Regrouping
Students will kick off the course by focusing on 2-digit addition problems without regrouping. They will explore different methods for solving these addition facts, including using place value concepts and using number lines. Students will also engage in practical activities to reinforce their understanding of addition without regrouping.

Week 2: 2-Digit Addition with Regrouping
This week, students will expand their addition skills to include regrouping. They will learn strategies such as the "carrying over" method and using place value to add 2-digit numbers. Through hands-on activities and practice exercises, students will gain confidence in solving addition problems with regrouping.

Week 3: 2-Digit Subtraction without Borrowing
Students will shift their focus to subtraction in Week 3, specifically 2-digit subtraction problems without borrowing. They will learn various strategies for solving these subtraction facts, including using number lines and regrouping from the tens place. Practical activities and problem-solving tasks will help students solidify their understanding of subtraction without borrowing.

Week 4: 2-Digit Subtraction with Borrowing
In Week 4, students will tackle 2-digit subtraction problems that require borrowing. They will learn the concept of borrowing from the tens place and develop strategies to solve these subtraction facts accurately and efficiently. Through practice exercises and real-life scenarios, students will sharpen their skills in subtraction with borrowing.

Week 5: 3-Digit Addition without Regrouping
Students will move on to 3-digit numbers in Week 5, focusing on addition without regrouping. They will apply their understanding of place value concepts to add three-digit numbers efficiently. Engaging activities and problem-solving tasks will deepen their comprehension and strengthen their mental math skills.

Week 6: 3-Digit Addition with Regrouping
In the final week, students will explore 3-digit addition problems that require regrouping. They will develop strategies to effectively add three-digit numbers, including carrying over from the ones place to the tens and hundreds places. Through practice exercises and real-world scenarios, students will become proficient in solving addition problems with regrouping.

Throughout the course, students will engage in hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks to reinforce their learning. They will develop mental math strategies, improve their fluency, and enhance their problem-solving skills. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in addition and subtraction, enabling them to tackle more complex mathematical challenges with confidence.

Interaction in this Flex Class:
Students will receive links to virtual games that they can play.

Each week students will be prompted to share pictures to the classroom of any problems that they have solved using manipulatives.  

Each week students will receive worksheets with time problems that they will turn in to the teacher by the end of the week.  The teacher will check and provide feedback on these worksheets.  

This is a Flex class; therefore, there will be no live meetings. Lessons will be provided via video recording.
