Akwaaba! Welcome! Ghana has often been referred to as the beacon of hope on the African continent. This is so not only because it was the first in sub-Sahara Africa to gain independence from colonial rule but it also stands out as a model for democracy and political stability. Through a slideshow presentation, students will learn about the geography of Ghana and be able to locate it on the world map. I will give an overview of the country's history. We will learn about the flag, language, food, shared values & norms, clothing, and sports. Students get to imagine themselves in a "tro-tro" or "okada" as we travel around to see some cool landmarks. Ever heard of names like Kwame, Kofi or Kwaku? Ghanaians have a special way of baby naming. So just for fun, students are welcome to share their favorite day of the week and discover what their Asante name would be. Through discussion, students will compare Ghanaian culture to where they come from. They are also encouraged to ask questions as we go through the lesson together. Please note that class time is approximate. It may run few minutes beyond or end a few minutes earlier depending on enrollment and learner participation. See you in the classroom!
