Campers will use focused reading of short passages of high-interest, non-fiction text about dinosaurs for the purpose of understanding key points, gathering evidence, and building knowledge. Each reading section will have a similar, repetitive structure to enhance reading accuracy and fluency. If your students is already a fluent reader, they may benefit from a more challenging camp. Students must have 1st - 2nd grade reading skills (Sample sentence: Triceratops cut plants with its sturdy beak.). Campers will practice how to read to find key details and develop comprehension skills through reading, cutting & pasting, story writing, vocabulary enrichment, coloring, and interactive games. Campers will receive a digital "Dinotopia Camper Journal" to download and print. At the end of each camp session, campers earn badges to represent the dinosaurs covered in that session (for a total of six badges). Session 1:Dinosaur Overview & Triceratops; Session 2: Brachiosaurus & Stegosaurus; Session 3:Pterodactyls & Tyrannosaurus Rex. Camp will be structured to begin with the "camp guide" (teacher) reading the featured passage of the day and campers following along silently. Campers will reread the selection independently (or with parent help) to identify and color code details. Cut-and-paste activities will be used to reinforce vocabulary. Campers will be encouraged to take part in group discussion about the main idea and details of the passage. They will do a short writing exercise in their journals and be encouraged to share their writing. They will play theme-based games as a group. Each session will end with campers earning badges to color, cut out, and paste into their camp journal.
