Class Experience

Join me for a fun, digraph-themed mystery game! In this one-time class, learners will practice their knowledge of letter sounds and digraphs by identifying beginning sounds in words. This class is basically a beginner’s introduction to segmentation, a key aspect of writing! Segmentation involves hearing, identifying, and separating each phoneme in a word. An example of this would be if I said the word “dog.” To segment, or separate, this word, the student should be able to hear and identify each phoneme (individual sound) in the word, “d-o-g.” Knowledge of letters and letter sounds will help learners connect those sounds they hear to a physical letter written on paper. Through this, children are able to put their spoken words into writing! This class is a beginner version of segmentation, introducing this skill by practicing just isolating the beginning sound in a word.

In this class, students will join me for a guessing game of words that start with the digraphs "sh, th, and ch!" Learners will guess each word based on clues given by the teacher, practice saying the word aloud, and identify the beginning sound in the word. From there, we will identify the letters accompanying that sound. Students will then be shown a visual of the digraph and have a chance to practice writing those letters with me. For the best experience, students in this class should have some prior knowledge of letters and sounds. It is helpful if they have prior knowledge of these digraphs (sh, th, ch), but it is not required. I will review each one as we encounter them. Regardless of letter knowledge, all learners are welcome to join in our mystery word fun and practice identifying beginning sounds with me!

Parental Guidance
Since this is a class for young learners, I just ask that a parent or guardian be around (within hearing distance) to help if/when needed (example: if technical issues arise and the student needs help in order to hear/speak/participate). It is helpful if your student knows how to mute/unmute. I try not to mute students, since my classes are very interactive, but I will as needed to ensure all students can hear me. Thank you for your support!
Supply List
Students may bring something to write with (ex: paper and pencil/pen/crayon, whiteboard and dry-erase marker) to participate in writing each digraph with me after we have identified them. I will provide an optional print-out in the classroom before the class begins with traceable letters to use as a guide. However, students can still benefit from the learning in this class without writing materials!
