Intro High School Digital Photography
Class experience
🔐 This class is first in the series of Digital Photography classes, which can be completed by learners using **any kind of digital camera.** 🖇️ Prerequisite: None ⏳ Estimated Time Commitment Outside of Class: 2-4 hours each week that class meets ✅ The material of this class is comparable to my DSLR Photography 101+201 classes, minus the focus on DSLR settings. This is a great fit for learners with a camera that isn't a DSLR/mirrorless, or who don't have an interest in learning manual...
- Students will understand the role of content, form, and context in visual communication. - Students will understand the background of photographic art. - Students will explore ways to tell stories with photographs: personal stories, stories about people, and stories about places. - Students will explore possible setting options that exist in photography in general, how/if they can be accessed on their device, and their effects on photographs. - Students will create mini-portfolios around a personally-selected visual goal in a final project. - Students will learn to speak about their work with pride, and share it with the group. - Students will practice the vocabulary and concepts covered in class through positive and technical discussion of everyone's photos each week.
I hold a BA in Studio Art/Photography and Psychology, and am trained both as a photographer and as a Montessori assistant teacher. As an educator I have experience teaching children pre-K through high school.
Homework Offered
✴ While class provides structure, support, information, and inspiration, the way to learn photography is taking pictures! To this goal, targeted projects are assigned each week. Projects are directly connected to the week's lesson, and are set up to encourage experimentation and discovery, in order to facilitate a successful learning process. ✴ Each class, students will be offered journal prompts to support their creative process and exploration of various photographer's styles.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
✴ Learner progress is assessed by completion of the projects and participation in discussions. ✴ I am happy to provide a grade or any other assessment/feedback if needed for credit purposes, just message me! Assessment when requested is based on: participation/attendance, journal completion, project completion, and weighted to unit 4/final projects.Grades Offered
- A camera with means to upload the files to a device with an internet connection, from which they can be submitted. Optional: - Cyanotype paper is optional for week #1 - Post-processing software such as Adobe Lightroom is welcome for students to use in completing their projects, but is not required/will not be taught. - A journal for weekly journal prompts (can also be done in a word processor on the computer)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Some photographers and/or photo theorists who we learn about may have photography work or analysis that involves nudity and themes of sexuality, much like you might encounter in an exhibit at an art museum or in fashion photography. We will not explore these in class, but there is the possibility that students come upon them during further research. Padlet is used to submit work and for resource sharing, no sign in is required. Google Slides & Google Docs & Google Drive are used for project planning and resource sharing, no sign in is required.
Portions of the course are designed with influence from the Aperture visual literacy curriculum and workshop.
