1-2 hours per week. Each week a question will be posted to the discussion board that students will be asked to answer. The students will also be provided with articles and worksheets pertaining to the subject matter as well as additional assignments in CK-12. The assignments do not have a time limit, so students can complete their assignments at their own pace. More information will be provided when the class is in process. At the end of the class, students will be given a fun and interactive Gimkit quiz to assess knowledge. This class is designed to best suit each student individually, therefore, families can use all of the recordings, discussions, the project, and reading materials the way that they see works best for their student(s).Assessment
Each week, the students will be required to complete the weekly discussion question in addition to answering the questions in the articles posted with the lessons. Students may also complete the questions in the Nearpod lessons while they are watching the recording for the week. This will help to them to reinforce the concepts presented in the lessons. In addition, students will also be provided a login to Ck-12, where they can access supplemental materials such as readings, videos, and interactives. Quizzes in Ck-12 are offered as a way to gauge student understanding of the optional lessons given in Ck-12. A Gimkit review will be provided at the end of the course to help assess student's understanding of the overall class.Grading
Quizzes in Ck-12 and Gimkit are automatically graded, therefore, students will have the opportunity to take and re-take the quizzes as they see fit.Class Experience

In this class, students will explore a variety of rocks and minerals that compose the world around them, from the Grand Canyon to the types of stones used in countertops and pencils. They will learn about the different ways rocks are formed, including volcanic eruptions and centuries-long sedimentation. Additionally, students will discover some of the most common minerals used and gain a better understanding of geology and the role of a geologist in understanding the natural environment. Students will have the opportunity to use a fun and interactive tool that will allow them to access class materials, participate in virtual field trips, and take practice assessments. Some of the minerals that the students will learn about are some of the more commonly used minerals like silver, quartz, and feldspar. Students will also have a chance to learn about rocks and minerals that are used in everyday life such as in building materials, cars, roads, and appliances. They will also learn and discover the different processes that form the three different types of rocks; igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. Students will learn about weathering and erosion and how they affect the environment. In addition, we will also explore the other chemical processes of rocks such as oxidation, hydrolysis, and carbonation. Finally, students will explore the science that goes into identifying and distinguishing the different types of rocks and minerals by looking at characteristics such as texture, coloring, and shape. Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material. Students will also work with Gimkit, a website that allows students to participate in interactive quizzes that will reemphasize the material presented to them in the recordings. Students will also work with CK-12 an interactive learning platform, that allows students to answer practice tests, read articles, and work in interactive textbooks. Assignments will be assigned in this platform weekly. Each student will be provided with their own login information to access their assignments and readings, which the teacher will set up.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. In the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental clean up projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their life to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and post graduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
