Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul-Dyslexia Friendly Book Club Self- Paced

In this four lesson novel study, learners read a fun book about a Heffley family road trip! This self- paced class is for all learners, but contains supports for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities.

Homework
As a flex class, learners will be assigned about 50 pages to read, response questions, and creative projects to be completed an submitted in our online classroom.
Assessment
Self Paced Learners can request a comprehension review Kahoot! for each lesson. A self assessment will be offered during the final class session.
Grading
Narrative Evaluation provided upon request for self paced learner if requested within one week of the end of class. The evaluation will be based on the self assessment, class participation, and the work submitted in class.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This self-paced class is for all kids, and  includes supports for learners with learning differences who need low reading level high interest books to develop reading fluency and comprehension.  In "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul"  by Jeff Kinney students will follow the Heffley family on the world's kookiest road trip!  Learners will read about 50 pages of this accessible graphic novel per unit.  

Students will respond to what they read using creative projects and class discussion to support writing development and comprehension.  Throughout the class, students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their kooky family adventures. Learners will also  learn executive function skills by planning their own road trip.

Learning Goals
Students will gain fluency and comprehension by reading and discussing the novel.  Students will practice organizing and communicating their ideas using creative projects, learner made video and other strategies.

Unit 1: Road Trip
Lesson 1:
Road Trip
 As the Heffley family plans their road trip, you can reflect on your own family travels and create a packing list for at least two members of the Heffley family. 
Unit 2: The Adventure Begins
Lesson 2:
The Adventure Begins
 As the Heffley family road trip begins, you will create your own "I Must Confess" game to play on your next road trip. 
Unit 3: Country Fair
Lesson 3:
Country Fair
 Like many families, the Heffley family will find themselves in some zany situations during their travels.  You will have the chance to draw a map of the country fair or create a fair food menu featuring your favorites. 
Unit 4: Choose Your Own Adventure
Lesson 4:
Choose Your Own Adventure
 As the Heffley family road trip finishes up, your family's adventures are just beginning.  Create an itinerary (plan) for at least one day of an imaginary or real road trip. 

Other Details

Learning Needs
This class is designed to support students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities with a fun low reading level book. Students can use graphic organizers, create videos, or draw to respond to class posts and videos.
Parental Guidance
Students can use Google Slides or Quizlet to create their game. I may provide Google Docs that learners can make a copy of and edit for their own use. Learners can review using Kahoot! All these are COPA compliant third party resources that do not require an account to use.
Supply List
"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" by Jeff Kinney is required for this class.  Students may use e-books, hardcopy and paperbacks, or audiobooks to read and comprehend the text.

Paper, markers or colored pencils, and pens or pencils are great to have on hand for class activities.  Students may need index cards to create a road trip game, but could create virtual resources if they prefer.
