Class Experience

*Diabuddies now meets weekly! This is a social club for children with diabetes who want to connect with others and make friends who share a similar experience.
** Please consider the ongoing Diabuddies club: https://outschool.com/classes/ongoing-diabuddies-jr-social-club-for-young-children-with-diabetes-4PrtBZmG?usid=vRBfy0cj&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link for easy scheduling. Thank you!

This is not a class where the student will be taught about a topic, but a fun club meeting. It offers a welcoming environment for those wanting to speak about their identity as it relates to their disability, and how it relates to other aspects of their lives or personality. The main purpose is to make friends, "dia-buddies"! We will learn more about each other via question and answer, sharing stories, and showing and telling.
We will also be discussing aspects of our lives more centered on what we enjoy while living with T1D or T2D. However, no medical advice in any capacity will be given. Any discussion brought up from students regarding advice will be halted.
There will be some time to do show-and-tell, so students are encouraged to bring an object and share about it freely.

The teacher will bring up the topics for discussion. Each topic will be displayed on the slideshow with added visuals to help students understand. The students will interact with each other verbally for the entire 30 minutes.
This class is designed for children who have diabetes, looking to make "diabuddies" (buddies who have diabetes.) So they should be able to speak about their experience having the disease on a very basic level.

Disclaimer: The teacher will not be giving any medical advice or therapy whatsoever. Students will be instructed to not give any advice to each other. This is a class designed to provide connection and support, not advice or therapy.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to speak about their lives, their interests, and their hobbies confidently.
They will learn to not be shy or ashamed to share about their illness.
They will learn how to make friends with others who share a similar experience.
Students will understand that everyone has a multifaceted identity that is valuable and worth sharing.
Students will appreciate that everyone is different, yet we can still connect and be friends.
Students will know the different ways that other children live with diabetes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have had type 1 diabetes since 2001. I have years of experience working with children and teens who have diabetes and similar medical disabilities. I am a volunteer mentor for newly diagnosed patients. I also offer support to parents of newly diagnosed young children with diabetes. I have created, hosted and monitored several support groups for both teens and young adults who have diabetes. I currently create and sell diabetes-themed artwork and designs that uplift and support the diabetic community.
I am the lead director of a local youth group, and have been involved with the organization for 4 years. I meet weekly with my youth group to discuss, connect, and support them. I have also worked with children as young as 2 with medical, physical, and cognitive disabilities.
This class is not a therapy session or to receive medical advice. It can be viewed as a social club. Although the students have a medical diagnosis, we will not be discussing management of the disease itself. There will be no medical advice given whatsoever. The teacher is a 20 year type 1 diabetic and T1D advocate, not a therapist or medical doctor.
