Is your child a fluent reader? Do you want their writing to be equally strong? Do you want to build your child’s vocabulary, develop your child’s writing style and expose your child classic literature? Whether you want to help your child to get ahead or to make up for learning loss, pupils in this class gain knowledge, skills and experiences that lead to academic excellence. In every lesson, I share my passion for good vocabulary, correct grammar and classic literature with your child....
This class is taught in English.
Before starting DEVELOPING WRITING COMPOSITION your child must be: • Writing at least 3 or 4 sentences independently • Spelling well enough to re-read their own work • Reading fluently (or work with parent to read the texts to be studied) During DEVELOPING WRITING COMPOSITION your child will learn to: • Notice the differences between how ideas are phrased in stories and conversations • Use advanced vocabulary e.g. 'entreated' and 'humble' • Recognise idioms and allusions from classic literature by reading the stories from which the phrases came You may need to help your child to: • Hold their work up to the screen to share it • Listen to the teacher and classmates • Answer questions, make comments or suggest ideas during a lesson • Upload work to the Outschool classroom each week Please keep your video on during lessons as it is difficult to properly monitor your work if I can not see you. Please make sure that you can quickly switch off your virtual background as backgrounds make it difficult for others to see your work when you hold it up to the screen. Please join the lesson from a quiet place so that the background noise in your home does not make it difficult to hear you when you speak (or you can wear headphones/a headset as these reduce the background noise).
I loved English literature at school and I enjoyed reading works like Jane Eyre and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I have taught literature (English Language Arts) to children aged 3-12 for over twenty years. I am particularly passionate about classic literature. I enjoy guiding young learners to understand the vocabulary and complex sentences of classic books and to learn from and love reading texts by authors like William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Best of all, I enjoy teaching young learners how to express their own ideas clearly and to communicate their own ideas about the world. Before joining Outschool, I was the headmistress of a primary school (elementary school principal) and I have been a fully qualified classroom teacher for twenty years. I have a postgraduate qualification in education leadership and a bachelor’s degree in primary education. I originally trained in the United States but I qualified in the United Kingdom and I work in London. I have worked with wide range of learners including gifted children; children with special educational needs or disabilities as well as children with a wide range of personalities and levels of motivation. If you have any questions or worries about your learner - please send me a message as I am happy to listen, discuss or advise.
Reading homework is set after each lesson. Pupils are also encouraged to upload their work to the outschool classroom and to comment positively on the work of others.
