Class Experience

[Note: I do not accept learners outside the listed age range. If your child is 6, 7 or 8 please enroll them in the class for that age range: https://outschool.com/classes/developing-conversation-skills-IyecxTJ9#usGFopJMDG]; If your child is 13 through 18, please enroll them in my teen course: https://outschool.com/classes/teen-conversation-skills-tHTI1vQV#usGFopJMDG

This course introduces students to the art of conversation using friendly characters. Your student will learn and practice what to say when he meets someone for the first time. She will also discover and practice how to keep the conversation going. Finally, your student will be able to end the conversation appropriately.

By the end of this introductory course, students will have the tools they need to create winning conversations with children of all ages. They will feel as confident starting a conversation with a new child in the neighborhood as they will feel having a conversation with their grandma and grandpa at the next family gathering.

During the class, we will use discussion, pair-sharing, games, and slides to practice the different parts of a conversation. Students will be assisted as needed to help them become comfortable. A downloadable worksheet will be provided to help reinforce at home what was practiced in class. Note: [This class requires a significant amount of verbal interaction between your child, the teacher, and other learners.]

The materials section below will describe what is needed for this class.

I offer group discounts (subject to schedule availability). Please let me know if you are interested in this class being offered to a group of 6 or more learners.

Parental Guidance
[Note: I do not accept learners outside the listed age range.] Parents, would you be able to ensure your child's microphone is set up appropriately? It is extremely frustrating for the kids when I have to repeatedly ask them to speak louder. In addition, it is fine for you to be in the room and not on-screen; however, would you be able to refrain from talking to your child during class. It is distracting when I am trying to have a discussion with them or give them instructions. Thanks, in advance, for your help! NOTES: 1) Parents always ask if my conversation classes are appropriate for their children. My answer is that your child should have an opportunity to practice his or her social skills and this is a safe place to do that. Their social skills will not improve if they are not given opportunities to use them. 2) This class will be taught to single learners. If you would rather your child was in a class with other learners, please contact me. 3) [***Transfers will not be made within 24 hours of the class start time. No exceptions.***]

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Mrs. A. and I am here to help your child build social-emotional skills. I joined Outschool in 2018 because it had a strong community of parents and kids who appreciated the unique and diverse courses being offered. I have a very diverse background which has always involved me teaching in some form or fashion. I am an international public speaker, Distinguished Toastmaster, teacher, and Scouts BSA Merit Badge Counselor for Public Speaking and Communication. I am a scientist by degree and have over 20 years of experience as a pharmaceutical scientist and scientific writer.

The majority of my courses will help your child build social-emotional life skills (i.e. conversation skills, decision making, goal setting/action planning, Identifying your values, etc.). However, I will periodically teach a science class or yarn craft class in order to share my other strengths.

My teaching philosophy is simple- I teach in a way so the student can understand and apply it. My classes are based on fun and practicing differentiated instruction (DI) which means I use whichever techniques (including Whole Brain Teaching) and tools I need to use to get the message across to my students. If they can't grasp it, then why am I calling myself a teacher. I use tools that will accommodate different student learning styles, readiness levels, backgrounds, and interests. My goal is to achieve maximum understanding by using the most effective and fun instructional strategies. I use a variety of techniques/materials so students learn in a way that works best for them.

One fun thing about me is that I love to have theme parties and make/decorate the cake to match the theme.

By the way, if you don't find the life skills class you need in my listings, please contact me and I will consider creating it for you.
