In this one-time class, learners will practice and perfect their argumentative skills by creating a mascot for a brand new school! To begin, learners will be introduced to a few new vocabulary words-- claim, elaboration, counterclaim, and rebuttal. Learners will be encouraged to take notes as Miss K overviews these topics and provides an example paragraph. Before hearing the task, learners will discuss what makes a good mascot and why. By the end of the lesson, learners should have a clear understanding of how to develop a claim, an elaboration, a counterclaim, and a rebuttal to enhance their argumentative skills.

The handout will include guided notes for learners to complete as well as an assignment to help learners determine their mascot. Learners are also encouraged to have a piece of copy paper to draw their mascots with color. The specific colors will depend on the preferences of the learner.
