Developing a Problem Solving Guru: First Steps (1 Time Class)

This class nurtures the ability for students to solve complex problems by breaking them down. Using two techniques developed by Edward Zaccaro, students solve math word problems that develop problem-solving mindsets and strategies.

Class Experience

Topics in this class are solving word problems at 4 different levels using:
- The Think 1 method
A method developed by Edward Zaccaro to developed to solve complex problems.

In this part of the class students master the concept and apply this method across practical problems. In increasing difficulty,
these problems train students to develop the pattern recognition and creative development necessary to solve word problems of
a specific type. These problems include scenarios involving division and multiplication.

- The 2-10 method
Another method developed by Edward Zaccaro. Students master problems involving division by breaking them into smaller,
easier to solve problems. Then scaling them back to the original problem for easy multiplication/division.

This class is a ONE-TIME class which is taught through Zoom on using a drawing tablet with a black background onscreen and color for contrast and emphasis. My teaching style involves pausing for questions at select intervals, but students are always free to stop me anytime they are confused. The class will be structured with a ten minute introduction to the techniques, 20 minutes on each of the techniques and problem-solving with them with students, then ten minutes allowing the students to solve some problems on their own to cement the lessons.

Students should be able to perform simple multiplication and division on paper and with a calculator. They should also have the ability to multiply and divide with fractions and decimals.

Learning Goals

Students develop key creative problem-solving abilities that further develop their mathematical ability. This includes being able to dissect a problem, learn its key steps, and then create a way of solving it that eliminates the "head spinning" effect lots of children feel when solving word problems. Allowing them to flourish in future math courses.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Master's student in Computer Science with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I have had lots of experience teaching STEM related subjects to peers and younger students from high school all the way through to now in grad school.

Developing strong problem solving and critical thinking skills is not only necessary for success in STEM fields and degree programs, but for general life success and organization. I aim to achieve this through means that positively reinforce students, rather than punishing them for what they may not know or need more help in mastering.

Treat my classes as if the students are following a chef in which the recipe is success and the ingredients are bright minds willing to learn and grow.
