Class Experience

Herzlich Willkommen!
We all know that being able to read well is imperative to succeeding in life.
Being able to read and understand additional languages will also benefit your child in school, college and their future job.
Languages are interwoven and words are often borrowed from another language.

In this class, we will read a short German text out loud and answer questions about the same.
The type and contents of text will vary with each class and will include age-appropriate historical texts, fairy tales, fables, children's magazines, informational texts on animals, plant life, newspaper articles, etc.
We will read a text, then clarify any words the students are not familiar with. We will use context clues to determine the meaning of new words and phrases.
I will then have the students answer comprehension questions and make sure the students understand the contents of the text.

I always pay particular attention to the students' pronunciation and enunciation, since I believe it is very important trait. The better your understanding and your pronunciation, the more motivated you are to continue learning and improving your skills.
Class will be somewhat lively and include lots of interaction with the students.

This class is not designed for beginning learners of the German language as they must already have some prior knowledge such as basic sentence structures and vocabulary.
This class is designed for advanced beginners (about 1 year of German), approximately aged 10 through 14.
The class will include instruction in German as well as English, if needed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,

Sibylle, court-certified translator, registered nurse, mom to four kiddos and three fur babies.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Foreign Language from Heidelberg University (Institute of Translation and Interpreting) in Heidelberg, Germany
My name is Sibylle Gray; I have four children and a passion for languages, reading, knitting, crocheting, painting, origami, learning about history and other cultures, hiking, fishing and baking bread and cakes.
I hold a Master's Degree in Linguistics (English, German, Spanish).
I have taught in-class German at private co-ops to children ages five through sixteen and I have been an online ESL (English as a second language) teacher for over 5years. I also have the 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certification.
Before going to university, I studied nursing and worked at a hospital as an R.N. I also worked on an ambulance for several years in addition to being a volunteer E.M.T. at the German Red Cross and a youth leader at the German Red Cross. I have a passion for the medical field and I enjoy being around other people.
I grew up bilingually and I have always enjoyed languages, history and other cultures. I was able to experience and compare the American and German culture first-hand, from which I have certainly benefited greatly.
Understanding and valuing other cultures are very important, especially in today's age and time. We all need to know more about each other so as to grow together and make the world a better place.
I am a passionate knitter and I am proud to say that my three older children all know how to knit and crochet. I love knitting hats, shawls, scarves, blankets, and many other things. I also love crocheting lace (using thread) and tatting.
I teach English (TEFL, TESOL) to international students and a few years year ago, one of my students introduced me to "origami". My children and I fell in love with origami and every evening, we get together to do origami.
I also enjoy painting with water colors and acrylics and I love drawing. My favorite motifs are unicorns as well as kawaii, chibis and manga images.
When I am on the road, at a doctor's office, at the park and even when we are fishing, you will find me either reading a book or knitting a hat or shawl (which might be the reason I haven't caught anything in a while :).
I would love to get to know your child and introduce him or her to the wonderful world of learning and having fun.
Have a wonderful day,
Miss Sibylle.
