US Grade 3 - 6
This class is designed to teach three strategies commonly taught to support students' division skills. There are many ways to solve a division problem, and different students find different strategies to be most helpful. In this course, we will practice 3 common strategies: area model, partial quotients, and the algorithm. Students will solve problems with 1 digit divisors and up to 4-digit dividends over the two sessions of this class. I will demonstrate each strategy being used for one problem so we can compare the strategies to help students find the one that best suits them now. The ultimate goal of these strategies is to eventually become most comfortable with the algorithm, and the use of the other strategies helps students ultimately make sense of the algorithm. A basic understanding of the multiplication table is preferred. If a student is not strong in his or her multiplication facts (0-9), I recommend having a multiplication chart nearby so the facts do not interfere with the student's learning of the strategies. If you do not have a multiplication chart, a quick internet search of "multiplication chart" will yield many results.
Learning Goals
Students will learn three division strategies to solve division problems with 1-digit divisors and up to 4-digit quotients. The strategies taught in this lesson include area model, partial quotients, and the standard algorithm.

Supply List
A one-page handout will be provided upon enrollment for the class. The handout will have an example of each strategy being used to solve a 3-digit dividend/1-digit divisor and 4-digit dividend/1-digit divisor division problem.
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hi! I'm Miss Gardner and I think learning should be fun! I am passionate about helping every child reach his or her full potential. I am committed to providing a supportive and engaging learning environment so that students enjoy learning even the most challenging of topics. I taught fourth grade for five years and loved every moment of being with the students. I transitioned to teaching online in 2019, and love teaching the topics that I am most passionate about. I love all things math related, am a big Disney fan, think reading is the best hobby, and have read the entire Harry Potter series three times. I teach math through real world scenarios so students can connect with the purpose of fractions, multiplication, shapes, and more! I also love a read aloud and a book club. If there's a favorite picture book you'd like to hear in an upcoming read aloud class, let me know when I see you in our next class together!
