If you could design your dream home, what would it look like? This three-week class is inspired by "The Big Orange Splot" by Daniel Pinkwater, a short charming children’s book about a man who transforms his home to fit his dreams. His home inspires his neighbors to create houses that fit their own personalities. We will read the book and encourage children to use art materials to design a house where, as the character says in the book, “My house is me and I am it, my house is where I like to be and it looks like all my dreams.” We'll explore our identities (what we care about, think about, what we like to do alone, what we like to do with others) and then apply those things to our design. We'll work over time to refine our design and apply the elements of art and principles of design to bring our visions to life. Our teaching approach combines technical artistic skill building with an emphasis on personal reflection and social-emotional work. Each session will consist of facilitator-led content, large group discussions, and individual work.
Learning Goals
Students Will:
- Reflect on their identities: likes, dislikes, preferences, and personal style.
- Build their imagination as they design a dream house that fits their personal style.
