Class Experience

In this weekly social art club we will use items, animals and even people from our individual lives or imagination to design new Pokemon characters. We will help each other think of details that are important for character development such as: personality traits, visual appeal and how to connect the two. As a facilitator I will help students to choose the item, give open ended questions to help them think about personality traits and how to portray them visually and give encouragement as they draw them and develop the accompanying back story.

At the start of each meeting, I will ask the students to think about items, animals and people that they would like to see as a Pokemon. I will ask about the personality or how it is used (if it is an inanimate object) and we will go through the steps of choosing all of the Pokemon characteristics including type, abilities, weaknesses and what it would look like as a Pokemon. I will then encourage them and talk them through the drawing process. For students who want help I'll describe (and when able) will provide images and guidance to help them draw their new Pokemon using simple shapes and easy drawing techniques.

As this is more of a social club than a drawing class, students will be allowed to talk to each other and me throughout our time together and will be encouraged to share their work and to praise others. This will also be modeled to help them use encouraging and kind language.

Students will not need any prior knowledge but an interest in Pokemon will help them to understand the traits that we are adding to the objects chosen.

Learning Goals

Students will gain an understanding of character development as they choose traits and design their character each week. There will be an emphasis on sick emotional sails such as taking turns to present and giving positive feedback to classmates.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm a homeschool mother of 5 who studied elementary education. I'm excited to bring my experience and knowledge to every class. My classes include a range of topics from Black History to Recycled Art to comparing books to the movies they've inspired and so much more! I enjoy seeing my students light up as they learn concepts and ideas that are new to them.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing Pokemon with my kids and baking!
