45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this class I will be teaching a problem based math lesson. We will discuss what area and perimeter is, how you find area and perimeter and the different scenarios when you would use one over the other. Then as a group we will start brainstorming our dream home. Is it in a city or suburbs? Is it by a beach or a lake? Lastly, once everyone decides on their dream home location we will start designing the room ( up to two stories.) After creating the inside and outside of the home, students will determine the area and perimeter. We will have both class discussion, brainstorming sessions and the students will each then be able to design what their dream home is. It would be helpful if they come to the class with basic multiplication facts.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to brainstorm and implement a plan or vision. They will also learn the difference between area and perimeter and how to solve for each.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!
My name is Randi Olan and I will be a sixth year 4th grade teacher in a public school in New York City! I love teaching and learning from my students. I like to get to know each of my students as an individual and help them explore their hobbies and interests. As a teacher I like to make lessons relatable and show them how they can apply these new skills in their everyday life. Besides teaching, I love traveling, exploring the outdoors and taking advantage of what New York City has to offer!
