40 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this ongoing course, students will study the art of design. Students will learn about different design aesthetics, learn the math needed to design (including dimension, area, and perimeter), and create master pieces of their own. This class is designed so that students can drop in whenever they please to work on specific elements of interest. They can also attend each section and build upon previous week’s knowledge! Some weeks come in sets and should be attended together for maximum understanding (please note the title of the week for clarity. For example, weeks 1-3 are called “inspiration” and work together). Week 1: Inspiration- Students will begin to collect inspiration. They will consider what they are interested in designing- real life houses? Star Wars Millenium Falcon makeover? Pokémon club house? Students will generate ideas and will be asked to collect their own inspiration and create an inspiration board- modeled off my Own farm house style inspiration board. Weeks 2-3: Inspiration- students will work on their inspiration boards in class and share them! Week 4-5: Outlines (paper) Students will begin their outlines on graph paoer, using a straight edge and a labeling process introduced in class. Week 6-7: “Designer Math”- Students will learn how to calculate the dimension, area and perimeter for a variety of shapes which may appear in their designs. Below is an overview of shapes covered. If students have taken my Design class they may be able to skip these weeks. However, I do plan to use breakout rooms for these work sesssions, so if they attend they will still be able to accomplish quite a bit. Week 6- rectangles and squares (including composite figures made of recrangles and squares) Week 7- Diagonals and composites composed of shapes other than recrangles and squares. *** Current Syllabus: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZhPXOUlqvvyHivKY3JbChCR6ycLsyNjwVohj1yHyGeM/edit?usp=sharing ***Features: Designing the Inside Workshops: will be time for us to workshop student work. They will be able to ask both peers and me for feedback and make adjustments on their designs based on that feedback. Virtual Design Programs: Class will cover some of the virtual programs I have used in the past for interior design. All programs will be free but may require that students sign up for an account or a free subscription. The links will be provided prior to class and students must create accounts before class to be able to participate properly. Show and Tell- This will always be an opportunity for students to share their creations with the group. They will explain the different stages of the process they engaged in and explain their design choices.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basic elements of design and complete a variety of designs on their own!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students may need some help organizing their work and may need help with their designs. They will also need adult assistance when registering for the online sites.
Supply List
Students will need graph paper. I will provide a printable copy in the enrolled learners section of the classroom. However, a graph paper notebook would be ideal as it allows students to make mistakes and carry on with their work beyond a single design. It also encourages mistakes, which are inevitable in the design process! Students will also need certain materials specific to the week, including a protractor, a ruler, coloring pencils, chalk, etc. No supplies will be a surprise at class and will be posted prior to the start of class!
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching math, including design, for a long time. This is also a very serious hobby of mine and I have been blessed with knowing interior and exterior designers who have weighed in on the ideal program order for this course.
