Students will learn how to visualize a building in terms of how to draw it in plan, elevation and section, which, working together, show a building in three dimensions. We will also start to make a cardboard model of the house that they design. During the...
Students will learn the basics of how to read architects' plans, and utilize the three main drawing types- plan, section, elevation in their own designs. They will understand that these three drawing types, working together can show the 3 dimensional form of a building.
My background is in architecture and I have worked in the field for over 10 years, drawing construction documents and designing buildings. I use a computer to draw now, but I firmly believe that drawing by hand is critically important when learning about design and architecture. For kids, designing by hand, putting thought to paper by hand BEFORE (or alongside) utilizing the computer helps develop their spacial perception and critical thinking. When I was a kid, I used to draw floor plans of my dream house. Looking back, I wish I had a class like this so I could further my designs!
