What are textures? The way something feels is called texture. Is it spiky? Is it soft? Is it wet? Is it fluffy? Is it gooey? These are just some of the textures we will talk about during the course. I will show various examples and students will get to say how they look and feel. Textures can be real and visual. Textures that are real are the ones that you can touch and say how they feel, maybe they are rough, maybe they are smooth. We will explore different textures and use materials that are available to you, for example: sandpaper, fur, beads, seashells, aluminum foil, even leaves and flowers are real textures. As far as Visual Textures go we will focus on different pencil techniques that create these textures, like hatching, stippling, scribbling, circling and also painting techniques like sponging, stamping, splattering etc… I will demonstrate and students will follow. Visual textures are the ones you see in a drawing or painting of a cat in which fur is made to “look” like “real” fur. In this ONE-TIME class I will show different types of textures to students, both pictures and actual textures, and they will say how they look or feel. We will learn the difference between visual and real textures. We will then familiarize ourselves with different drawing and painting techniques (examples provided in class). We will talk about real textures and where/how to find them and collect them and then we will start working on different drawing techniques (if time allows). *This is just an INTRO CLASS into a 3-week (6 classes) course. In this class students will learn the basics of textures.*
Learning Goals
Students will expand their knowledge on textures that are already familiar to them. We will name them and talk about how they look and feel. Students will also learn some drawing/ painting techniques that create these textures ( if time allows) .Students will get to react to all the textures (examples provided in class) and discuss together.
