2 hrs 40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will learn through experiences, questions and examples how to create a descriptive writing piece about themselves (their birth story). Week 1, we will read part of a story together and look at words that are over used and find their alternatives. We will also look at how we can use comparisons and our senses to spice up our writing. At the end of week 1, students will read the interview they need to conduct for homework that week. They will also brainstorm any questions they may want to add to their findings. During week 2, we will start with a story and then share some of our interesting findings with each other about the day they were born. I will share a couple examples of my own writing and I will give them a template to begin writing. I will be there to support them with questions if needed. Week 3 students should be about 75% finished their writing. Between week 2 and 3, they may have to work on their own between classes. During this week, students will finish writing and begin editing and revising. I have some resources to share with them that will help with that process. During our last week, students will share their completed projects, share a positive comment on something each person did well and students will do a self assessment. Lastly, if time allows students can add a sketch to their completed piece.
Learning Goals
Students will be learning different tools to use to make their writing more interesting to the reader.

Teacher expertise and credentials
This was one of my most favourite lessons to do when I had my own classroom. I have a few lessons on writing that I love supporting students in creating their own unique, descriptive pieces. Reading and listening to students writing, is one of my favourite parts about teaching.
