What's included

12 live meetings
9 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework will be given on Friday and the learners will have one week to complete the assignment. Homework consists of multiple-choice questions, true or false, short answer, analysis, and essay questions. I provide detailed feedback for each assignment so that the learners can evaluate which area is lacking. The learners find this very useful to reinforce what they have learned from the class. A total of 5-6 lab exercises will be given for each core topic. Due to limited amount of time, the learners will be completing the assignment with some basic instructions and will be required to complete the pre- or post-lab questions.
Letter Grade
A comprehensive end-of-course exam will be administered at the conclusion of the program to assess the students' overall understanding of the material.

The immune system plays a crucial role in defending against pathogens and is implicated in the development of autoimmune diseases, allergies, and cancer. This course provides an overview of basic immunology, covering cellular and molecular processes integral to the human immune system.

Study materials encompass immune system cells and organs, antigens, immunoglobulins, antibody diversity, innate and adaptive immunity molecular mechanisms, the complement system, antigen presentation, and cell-mediated effector responses. Additionally, learners are introduced to various infectious diseases through illustrated, concise videos that follow the course of each patient's illness from presentation to resolution.

By integrating microbiology, pathophysiology, and immunology, the course aims to engage learners and emphasize the importance of future studies in microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases.

The course is interactive, featuring slide presentations, videos, and lectures. It is structured to run once a week for eight weeks, covering the topics mentioned in the course syllabus.

Learning Goals

Upon finishing this course, learners should be capable of:
- Exhibiting a fundamental understanding of immunological processes at both cellular and molecular levels.
- Grasping the principal immunological principles and concepts.
- Articulating the pivotal stages in antigen presentation and elucidating how antigens influence subsequent effector responses.
- Recognizing the primary mechanisms of inflammation.
- Comprehending and articulating the fundamentals of allergy and allergic diseases.
- Acquiring familiarity with the immune system's involvement in cancer and tumor immunology.
- Describing, comparing, and contrasting the primary mechanisms and cellular components of innate and adaptive immunity and elucidating their interconnections.

12 Lessons
over 12 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Introduction to immune systems
Students will learn the basic structure and function of the immune system, including its key components and their roles in defending the body against pathogens. They will also gain an understanding of the differences between innate and adaptive immunity.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Hematopoiesis & immune cell types
Students will explore the process of hematopoiesis, learning how blood cells are formed and differentiate into various types of immune cells. They will also study the distinct functions and characteristics of these different immune cell types in the immune response.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Local vs. systemic inflammation
Students will examine the differences between local and systemic inflammation, understanding how each type of inflammatory response manifests and affects the body. They will also learn about the underlying mechanisms and implications of both local and systemic inflammation in disease processes.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Introduction to pattern recognition receptors
Students will be introduced to pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), learning about their role in the immune system's ability to detect pathogens. They will study the different types of PRRs and their mechanisms for recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs).
45 mins online live lesson

Hello everyone! I am Dr. Lee and have a PhD in immunology from University of Wisconsin-Madison. I also worked at Yale University for two years, where I examined the role of immune cells in the process of aging. I have extensive scientific teaching experience in high school and college settings. I have developed and taught various introductory biology courses in tutoring and in a classroom setting. I have also taught Korean in various settings in high school and college level.

In my class, I will utilize various teaching methods that will help the students to learn biology, including cam-doc, PowerPoints, and worksheet. The students will also reinforce their knowledge by writing down the notes, which is an important aspect of future career. During the course, it is my goal to foster critical thinking, stimulate intellectual growth, enhance engagement and participation, and inspire students to reach their full potential. For me, teaching is another form of learning; my interactions with students ignite a continuous urge to learn more, trigger new ideas and engender strength to move forward.

I will also incorporate diversity of student backgrounds, strengths, weaknesses and problem solving skills to customize my teaching style. Students needed to identify the experimental goals and organize fundamental biological concepts and my role as a teacher is to effectively guide students to a complete understanding of the subject.

I am also available for additional sections (requested by learners) and individual tutoring. Please drop me a message to schedule additional sections if you would like to schedule other time-

Class policy:
⭐ If nobody shows up in the classroom within 10 minutes after the start time of the class, the teacher will cancel the class for that day, and there won't be any makeup classes.
⭐ The teacher will provide grades to those who request them. However, to receive a grade, students must complete all optional quizzes, homework, and labs.
⭐ All students must show respect towards the teacher and their peers throughout the class.
⭐ Students are not required to use their video camera during class, but they must turn it on when they join the class every day. It's recommended to use a microphone instead of typing in the chat for better learning experience.
⭐ The teacher will only arrange makeup classes if they are unable to attend the class. There won't be any makeup classes if a student misses the class. However, students can view the recorded class if at least one other student was present in the class.
