1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. At the end of the class, students will be asked to take what they have learned and 'discover' their own deep-sea creature. They will need to describe what zone of the ocean their discovery lives in and what adaptations it has that allows it to live there. There will be a Kahoot quiz provided after the class ends as a fun review. There will also be optional printouts to reinforce facts and vocabulary learned. Includes a crossword puzzle and search-a-word.Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
In this one-time class, we will dive... deep down into the depths of the ocean. We will look at a variety of animals that can be found in the deep-sea, scouring the globe. Using a combination of lectures, slides, photos, videos, brainstorming, and other interactive activities we will learn about these fascinating (and sometimes frightening!) animals. We will start by reviewing the different zones of the ocean and what makes each zone unique. That will help us in understanding the animals that live in these zones and the unique adaptations they have in order to do so. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary. This is part of a series that students can take that will end up covering 100+ animals. These courses can be taken in any order. In this class, we will cover 8 deep-sea creatures: Basket Star, Pacific Sleeper Shark, Deepsea Lizardfish, Flying Buttocks (It's a real thing!), Hatchetfish, Slender Snipe Eel, Venus Flytrap Anemone, Sea Spiders. We will also be viewing a few videos from the Monterrey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's, Nautilus Live, and Schmidt Ocean Institute YouTube channel that pertain to the animals being discussed. There will also be optional printouts to reinforce facts and vocabulary learned. Includes a crossword puzzle, and a search-a-word. I am fairly flexible for shorter notice and could even do same-day classes on all other days of the week. Can be flexible with time zones and accommodate all time zones in the USA, and morning/early afternoon time zones in Australia. If you don't see a class time that works for you, send me a message and I'll see what we can work out.
