Deep Sea Creatures (FLEX) | The Spooky Secrets of the Seas!
In this six-week FLEX course, students will explore the diversity of organisms that live in the deep ocean, from mysterious giant squids to the mushy blobfish to the glowing anglerfish. You'll be amazed by what's hiding in the deep ocean.

Class Experience
What lies in the deepest parts of the ocean? Deep sea creatures are remarkably well adapted for the extreme conditions below the thermocline. In this FLEX class, students will learn about this intense ecosystem and the weird critters that inhabit it. After six weeks, students will have learned about the following: 1) Conditions in the deep sea and how animals must adapt to hypoxia, high pressure, and the absence of light 2) Common adaptations in the deep sea like chemosynthesis, bioluminescence and gigantism 3) At least fifteen unique deep sea species - this is the fun part! 4) The history of deep sea exploration, with an emphasis of Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh's missions
I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's degree in teaching science. In the past, I have worked in an aquarium with marine animals.
Each week, there will be a Quizziz for students to complete to test their knowledge. Additional tasks and supplemental materials will be shared in the classroom for students to read, watch, and complete, as desired. Students will be encouraged to join in weekly discussion with classmates (pending section enrollment)!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal written assessment will be given in the classroom. If you would like more formal assessment for home-schooling purposes, please send me a message!
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Youtube and other external websites will be used. Please note that I will proof all materials for appropriateness but cannot guarantee the content of any advertisement. I recommend using an adblocking extension or software.
