Wondering what you might see down in the deepest parts of the oceans around the world? I'll give you a hint. They are mysterious and creepy! There is no light down on the deepest ocean floors so these animals usually live in complete darkness! They have changed and adapted in so many ways. We are going to take a look at a few of them and learn some interesting facts about each along the way. The class will be taught using a slideshow presentation, where we can see images of real animals and learn facts to build our knowledge together. Learners are encouraged to ask questions as we go. There is no background knowledge required for this class. There will be an interactive game to play at the end of class as a review.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what types of animals and fish can live down deep in the oceans. They will learn a few interesting facts about each animal too, like how they survive, what they eat, and more!
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Some of the animals are a bit creepy looking, with large teeth. The anglerfish pictured on the class cover is the most potentially upsetting image learners will see in class. Most are fine, like the squid and jellyfish.
Supply List
A page will sent to parents/learners for after class to identify deep sea creatures. There will be images of ocean animals and learners will be asked to circle deep sea creatures and place an "x" on animals that do not live in the deep. This page is optional and does not need to be turned in.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi! My name is Ms. Jess. I have been a classroom teacher for 9 years. My passions include teaching young learners about marine science, reading and math. I live where it's always warm so I am passionate about the ocean and the animals that live in it.
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a bachelor's degree in Spanish. I am a K-6 certified teacher and have worked in the public school system for 9 years, and worked for 1 year in a private school setting. I have my ESOL (English Speakers of another Language) endorsement and have almost completed my reading endorsement. I have taught 1st grade, pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten. Currently, I am a reading interventionist for grades K-4! Just before accepting this position, I taught Kindergarten for 7 years. I have worked with many students who have an IEP and many students whose native language is something other than English. My year teaching pre-kindergarten was in a private school and I was fortunate to create the curriculum. I did this by focusing on common core and state standards, while also considering what is expected of incoming Kindergarteners.
My classroom is a warm and welcoming place where young learners thrive and time flies because we are having so much fun! I can't wait to meet you!
