Decorative Hand Sewing: Learn the Basics and Make a Monster Toy

In this 8-week class, students will learn to design and make their own monster toy alongside learning a variety of embroidery stitches.

Class Experience

This hand sewing class is designed for complete beginners to hand sewing but can be taken by intermediate sewers as well.

In this class, students will learn to design and make a monster toy using hand embroidery by the end of the 8 lessons.

Lesson 1:
*Introduction to the monster toy project
* Draw four monster designs 
*Learn what the different stitches look like so that they can add them to their monster designs.

Lesson 2:
*Prior to lesson two I will send you an instructional video about how to prepare your thread and needle for this lesson (this gives us more time to learn stitches.
*Learn a variety of stitches and create a stitch sampler. 
*Learn how to start and end stitching and what to do if you make a mistake.
*Learn to do running stitch, back stitch, cross stitch, fly stitch, chain stitch and french knot (depending on students abilities)

Lesson 3:
*Make and cut a paper template
*Pin and cut fabric for the monster

Lesson 4:
*Learn to Applique and start to decorate the monster.

Lesson 5:
*Decorate monster 
*Learn how to stitch on a button
*Learn additional stitches /Bow making/sewing beads/sequins.

Lesson 6:
*Learn to blanket stitch
*Pin and sew the monster together

Lesson 7:
*Finish sewing around the monster
*Stuff and sew up the gap
*Show the class your monster toy


Requirements:
*Students will need to use fabric scissors, needles, pins and thread scissors -So supervision should be nearby.
*It is useful for me to be able to see the students hands while they are sewing so that I can help if needed.

>Printed PDF for designing
>Paper -Printer paper works well
>Stationary -Pencil, eraser, colouring pencils and fine liner pen (black pen)
>Printed PDF for paper template
>Thread Scissors
>Fabric scissors
>Paper scissors
>Hand sewing needle - large eye but also sharp -I will send a link to suitable needles
>Pins
>Needle threader - only needed in case of a student really struggles to thread
>Embroidery floss/Thread- in a variety of colours
>2 x Felt 9" by 12" OR 1 x 12" by 18" - this will make up the main body so normally is the same colour but doesn't have to be.
>Felt pack - a variety of felt pieces dependent on student design - you can get 8" by 8" multi-packs - this for applique
>Toy stuffing- small bag
>Buttons - These can be optional - the number will depend on the students' design.
Optional Extras design features:
>Bow -Tulle netting (you can buy rolls you will only need a small amount) and a bead or button for the centre of the bow.
>Sequins/beads
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
