Decoding IPA: The International Phonetic Alphabet (Ages 8-12)
What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, we will take a look at IPA: International Phonetic Alphabet. This is a universal alphabet that lists all the possible sounds we can make in any language. It's often used by linguists to describe the sounds of spoken languages, but in this course, we will use it to decode words and sentences to solve a puzzle. We will learn all the symbols for consonant and vowel sounds in IPA, then we will practice decoding words together in class. Students will have an opportunity to decode words with other students as an extra challenge. Together, students will decode a sentence completely written IPA by the end of class and know how to write a secret message.
Learning Goals
By the end of class, students will be able to recognize and identify the consonant and vowel symbols in English according to IPA. They will also be able to decode words and sentences using these symbols.
