Can you do it? "Yes Ma'am I can!" Let's spend five straight days to strengthen our decimal skills! From my many years of teaching math, I have discovered that once learners make connections with their math thinking, it clicks! Many learners are intimidated by decimals due to the abstract idea of them. This course will not only make it less (or start the path) intimidating, but it will also give confidence to understanding how to apply these related skills! Each day will consist of applied strategies, little tricks, and word problems. Day 1: Understanding the basics of decimals (how they apply to real world situations) and adding them! Day 2: Decimal Subtraction! *learner should know basic multi-digit subtraction skills* Day 3: Decimal Multiplication! *learner should know basic multi-digit multiplication skills* Day 4: Decimal Division! *learner should know basic long division skills* Day 5: Putting it altogether with Jeopardy! Classes will begin with background knowledge to engage what learners already know and what they remember from our last class. I will then teach the explicit skill with the Gradual Release Model ( I do, We do, You do). Through direct instruction, real world questions, and games, students will be able to apply "Practice makes Progress" in every class. A short homework assignment (always optional for additional practice) will be assigned to evaluate application and understanding, and also to help guide my instruction for our next class (do we need more practice before moving on?). Immediate feedback will assist in your learner's success!
