Deal or no deal? In this fun, interactive introduction to economics, students will explore why some pets are harder to get than others -- and how to achieve their own goals by adding value for other players -- in a guided discussion of the popular Roblox game, "Adopt Me." After a quick icebreaker to share our most sought-after pets, we’ll explore the concepts of supply and demand with some kid-friendly visuals. At the end of our time together, students will understand the basic concepts of supply, demand, surplus, and shortage and be able to identify one or more specific examples of how they apply to trading in "Adopt Me."
I hold two summa cum laude degrees from Hillsdale College in German and History with a concentration in American economic history. I've owned and operated a small business since 2013 and currently serve as a full-time substitute teacher, private tutor, distance learning facilitator, and classroom volunteer.
No homework is required!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents will receive a personal update at the end of the course noting informal student feedback and, if applicable, recommended resources for further learning.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Roblox is an online gaming platform for players of all ages with inter-player communication capabilities. "Adopt Me" features no violence or disturbing imagery, but other games on the Roblox platform may be frightening or inappropriate for children. While most of the inter-player communication I witness in "Adopt Me" is friendly and trade-related, some players are unfortunately deceitful or unkind from time to time. I highly recommend monitoring your child's game play (and even playing the game together occasionally!) to help keep your child safe and address such issues if they arise. To minimize distractions, we will NOT use Roblox during class time.
Your child will need a Roblox account and some prior experience playing "Adopt Me" to get the most out of this course, but we will NOT play the game during class time.
