US Grade 8 - 11
In this 16 week class, students will look at the Founding Fathers and Founding Mothers of the United States of America. Students will look at the Founders, warts and all. In week 1, students will learn about the United States' First President, George Washington. Was Washington perfect? No, he was like any other man and was slightly flawed. Students will learn about his character, character flaws, and his huge contribution to the United States. Students will also learn about Oney Judge who was an enslaved individual Washington owned that escaped and was able to live in freedom. In week 2, students will look at Alexander Hamilton, his triumphs, flaws and contributions to the United States. Clips from the play Hamilton will also make an appearance. In week 3, we will look at the Schulyer sisters- Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy. How were these ladies an influence on Alexander Hamilton and what did they contribute to the United States? In week 4, we will look at the Constitutional Convention's elder statesman, Benjamin Franklin. What were his contributions to the United States? In week 5, we will look at John Adams. We will look at his days as a lawyers for the Boston Massacre Perpetrators to his role as 2nd president and his doomed policies. In week 6, we will look at John Adams' wife Abigail Adams, who urged her husband "to remember the ladies" prior to him attending the Constitutional Convention. In week 7, we will look at staunch Anti-Federalist Samuel Adams and his contribution to colonial America and the early republic. In week 8, we will look at Thomas Jefferson, his triumphs and flaws, from the writer of the Declaration to his role in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions and his role as the US' 3rd President. In week 9, we will look at James Madison from his role as "Father of the Constitution" and his legacy as President. In week 10, we will look at John Jay. He was the first Supreme Court Chief Justice and he wrote a handful of the Federalists papers In week 11, we will look at John Hancock, whose signature appears most prominently in the Declaration of Independence. In week 12, we will look at Thomas Paine, the author of Common Sense. In week 13, we will look at Patrick Henry. In week 14, we will look at George Mason. In week 15, we will look at John Marshall. In week 16, we will have an ultimate review trivia game via Kahoot.

Gilder Lehrman American History, Standford History Education Group, History.com, Nearpod, Library of Congress. These websites have primary source documents. We will look at the primary source documents of the Founders but will also look at contemporary research on the founders from these websites.
