Dazzling Division

In eight sessions, students will model division of whole numbers, two or three digits divided by one or two digits, use manipulatives to build the operation, and use different visual and numeric methods to display division.

Description

Class Experience

Students will understand the concept of division as a process of making fair shares.
connect what it means to "do" division at the manipulative level with the "writing" about division at the abstract level.
practice fair sharing with a concrete model.
Students will understand the meaning of multi-digit division in the base-ten number system.
practice division at the concrete level with base ten blocks
experience the process of division in a playful and meaningful context
Students will recognize patterns in the multiplication table
use mathematical reasoning to explore divisibility
Students will explore prime and composite numbers by construction rectangles with square area tiles
organize their findings and generalize that some numbers are divisible only by one and themselves (prime) and others have multiple divisors (composite)
Students will solve real-life word problems using all four operations (with an emphasis on division.)
Students will determine how to handle remainders depending on different real-world situations.
Learners will be assessed informally as classroom answers are shared. I will also check homework answers to make sure students are able to transfer knowledge to independent practice,
Students will have 0-3 problems to solve between classes.

1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
