There is a dark side. When we look out into the universe, whether standing on Earth, through telescopes, or from satellites, we tend to focus on the matter we can see. But what is all the darkness? Is there anything there? Students will be immersed in the science of galaxies to learn about the parts of our universe we cannot see. This is an adaptation of a lesson I taught for 8th graders for two years at a college preparatory school. The foundation of this unit is based on research conducted by leading scientists in the field of astrophysics. The course is then enhanced with age-appropriate material designed to be accessible for teenagers and address a wide variety of learning styles.
