There is a dark side. When we look out into the universe, whether standing on Earth, through telescopes, or from satellites, we tend to focus on the matter we can see. But what is all the darkness? Is there anything there? Students will be immersed in the science of galaxies to learn about the parts of our universe we cannot see. The class includes many visuals to help students understand the different properties of dark matter and dark energy, and how they influence objects in their environment. Students will learn and use physics concepts such as gravity, light, motion, and density, throughout the lesson and will make conclusions about the existence of dark matter and dark energy. This course is on a specialized topic within the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. The course will stray away from complex mathematics to be more accessible to students of all mathematical levels. Throughout the lesson, students will gain confidence in skills that are applicable to all fields of science such as questioning, predicting, observing, and critical thinking.

Teacher expertise and credentials
This is an adaptation of a lesson I taught for 8th graders for two years at a college preparatory school. The foundation of this unit is based on research conducted by leading scientists in the field of astrophysics. The course is then enhanced with age-appropriate material designed to be accessible for teenagers and address a wide variety of learning styles.
